📍 Aula Magna, Polo Monte Dago, Università Politecnica delle Marche, Via Brecce Bianche 12, Ancona (Italy)
On the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the Università Politecnica delle Marche hosts a public meeting dedicated to this year’s theme, Resilience Starts at Home: safer buildings, prepared citizens, and communities able to prevent risks before they turn into disasters.
The event brings together institutions, social organisations, businesses, professionals and citizens with one shared goal: putting research at the service of local communities.
Four themes at the heart of the discussion
Research: climate, seismic and hydrogeological risk, risk communication, and artificial intelligence for early warning systems.
Innovation: digital tools, sensor networks, forecasting models, and support platforms for municipalities.
Education: students, PhD candidates and young researchers engaged in workshops on the culture of prevention.
Social engagement: dialogue between universities, municipalities, Civil Protection, schools, associations and citizens.
Programme highlights
The day opens with welcome addresses from regional and local authorities, the Rector of UNIVPM, and the presidents of the professional associations of engineers, architects, surveyors and geologists. A session of institutional talks follows, featuring the Special Commissioner for Reconstruction, the Deputy Commissioner for Floods, Civil Protection, local mayors, and the United Nations University (UNU-CRIS).
Throughout the day, researchers from UNIVPM, UNICAM, UNIMC, UNIMOL, INAF-Catania and the volunteer organisation LARES will present their work on topics including the history of the UN’s shift from disaster management to risk reduction, resilient urban planning, dynamic digital twins for disaster monitoring, post-disaster reconstruction timelines, the impact of floods on people and buildings in urban areas, IoT and smart sensor networks for early warning, and the role of AI in disaster risk scenarios.
The day closes with final conclusions involving HPC4DR, Civil Protection, LARES volunteers, ANCI, and the local professional associations.
Free registration. Training credits are available for members of the Engineers’ and Architects’ Associations and the Surveyors’ Board.
