Scientific Visualization & Geospatial Intelligence Lab

VisIVOLAB is the Visualization and Data Analytics Competence Center of INAF, dedicated to scientific visualization, advanced geospatial analysis and 3D modeling. Established with the support of the National Institute for Astrophysics and the National Research Centre for High Performance Computing, Big Data and Quantum Computing, it transforms multidisciplinary datasets into intuitive, interactive representations using advanced 2D/3D visualization, high‑performance rendering and visual‑analytics workflows .

Why VISIVOLAB?

VisIVOLAB was created to address a pressing need: understanding complex environmental and scientific phenomena through visual means.

Originally conceived within the HaMMon project, the laboratory now aims to become a national and international hub for scientific visualization, with particular emphasis on environmental disasters, territorial mapping and VR‑driven data exploration. It is a cross‑disciplinary research facility that combines immersive scientific visualization, advanced geospatial analysis and 3D modeling to help researchers and stakeholders make sense of complex data.

Beyond its roots in astrophysics, VisIVOLAB develops digital‑twin solutions that integrate physical models, AI, edge computing and multi‑source data, enabling monitoring, prediction and decision‑making in scientific, environmental and industrial scenarios.

OUR MISSION

Guided by four key objectives, we aim to:

  • Empower evidence‑based decisions through insightful visualization and visual analytics that transform data into actionable insights.
  • Translate complex scientific information into clear narratives for diverse audiences, bridging the gap between scientists and the public.
  • Create immersive environments that advance research and inspire education by building 3D and VR platforms for exploration and learning.
  • Foster collaboration across disciplines and sectors by uniting experts from astronomy, environmental science, engineering and beyond to catalyze interdisciplinary solutions.

OUR VISION

Guided by a long‑term vision, we aim to:

  • Evolve into a national and international reference centre for scientific visualization.
  • Push the boundaries of visual analytics beyond astrophysics, applying our expertise to environmental science, geology, biology and social sciences.
  • Harness high‑performance computing and scalable data‑processing to support real‑time monitoring, prediction and decision‑making.
  • Build immersive environments that democratize access to scientific knowledge enabling researchers, educators and the public to explore complex phenomena through visual means.
